Bike ArtBike Art Book

I am one of the artists featured in a book about bicycle art from around the world. It was published this year by a European murals group: www.carpe-diemact.gr. Several of my drawings and paintings have been selected for the book.

The book is available at Amazon.

Acrylic InnovationAcrylic Innovation

I am one of the artists featured in this large-format book recently written by Nancy Reyner and published in 2010. The book is full of original artwork and shows artists, diverse in styles and subjects, each using acrylic paint in unique ways to create expressive and personal art. I use acrylic paint for every painting I complete - even if I finish the work in oils – as its properties enable me to build and deface layers of paint quickly to create the impression of age and decay.

The book is available at Amazon.

Project 50 x 50
In the summer of 2010 along with a group of fellow artists I undertook to create 50 pieces of art in 50 days. Each of my small paintings measured 6” x 6”. The completed works were displayed in my studio during the Open Studios weekend of October 2010. I posted many of the pieces on my blog as they were finished.

“The Mission is the Art”
I was recently featured in a short video done by a local online news site. Mission Local focuses on the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco where I have my studio in a historic factory building at 1890 Bryant Street. The article looks at how the Mission influences my work.

For this show I have focused on old pier structures on the edges of San Francisco and New York. These buildings are rapidly being changed or demolished in a wave of urban renewal rolling over both cities. My paintings explore their utilitarian qualities, the randomly developed panels evoking fragmentation and decay in the repeated architectural module.

Catherine Mackey’s paintings are firmly rooted in a curiosity and engagement with the urban environment. The artist gathers the source material for her paintings on long exploratory walks. For Urbanambulations, she focused on the dense urbanity of San Francisco’s Mission District. Mackey is inspired by glimpses of compositions that are inherent in any vibrant city - the juxtaposition of bright signs with grey concrete, lumbering trucks with flashes of bicycles. The artist uses these hints as the genesis of her work. The artist photographs and sketches these scenes extensively before rendering them on panels that she treats like puzzle pieces, matching them together and combining disparate elements to form whole paintings.
