Catherine Mackey's Pier modules are versatile pieces. They are developed as stand-alone paintings but can be arranged in a series or be fixed together to become one larger piece.
Mackey’s paintings are often created from multiple panels which are developed individually and then combined to form a patchwork composition. In her exploration of the urban environment she has developed an interest in the repetition of the architectural module often found in industrial buildings. The working piers found on the edges of San Francisco and New York are often long constructions of a repeated design.
The Pier Module idea was developed after clients expressed an interest in her long paintings of these piers, but were unable to fit them into their homes. It is a logical deconstruction of her process which emphasizes the fragmentation found in the urban environment.
With her Pier Modules she has developed a way for her clientele to interact directly with her work, allowing them to express their own aesthetic by combining modules to form their own pier.
